Solmar Foundation is a charitable foundation created in honor of Don Luis Bulnes Molleda, the founder of Solmar Hotels & Resorts. Don Luis, as he was respectfully called, came to Los Cabos, Mexico in 1955, when he was appointed general manager of Mexico’s only tuna cannery. He is credited for turning a barren spit of sand into a thriving resort community as well as building and maintaining the area’s reputation as a world-class blue marlin capital. At that time, the village at the end of the Baja peninsula was barely on the map.
Before long, Bulnes was a partner in a fishing fleet and had built a 20-room hotel on Solmar Beach, which is a few hundred yards from the landmark arch. During the next several decades as Cabo grew at an annual clip of 20 percent, the Bulnes family assembled a collection of upscale hotels and timeshare properties, along with several successful local restaurants.
